The South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services (SCDPPPS)- in conjunction with the South Carolina Department of Administration and Tyler Technologies- has launched its new artificial intelligence (AI) assistant on the agency website (https://ppp.sc.gov/). This user-friendly, interactive agent will simulate human conversation to make in-depth agency information more available to offenders, victims, courts, and other members of the public served by SCDPPPS.

SCDPPPS’s AI assistant is an extension of “Bradley,” the AI resident assistant on SC.GOV. Users will access the assistant via a widget from any page on the agency website and it is available on desktop and mobile. Features from Bradley, such as voice-to-text and user response feedback, are available on the AI assistant.

The AI assistant, designed to resemble the SCDPPPS seal, is equipped to answer a variety of questions pertaining to SCDPPPS programs and processes. Some AI assistant inquiry topics include agency history, available positions, offender statistics, offender supervision, rehabilitation, pardon applications, victim services, the Ignition Interlock Device Program and the Board of Paroles and Pardons.

“This technology will provide our department with another tool in our toolbox to educate the public about the many ways PPP works to rehabilitate offenders and protect public safety,” said Director Jake Gadsden, Jr. “Through this user-friendly AI assistant, website visitors can access in-depth information at their fingertips about supervised offenders, restitution payment and community programs.”

SCDPPPS is the third largest state law enforcement agency in South Carolina and is charged with the supervision of over 24,000 offenders living in the community placed on probation by the Court, granted parole by the South Carolina Board of Paroles and Pardons, and enrolled in mandatory release programs. Offenders are supervised according to a wide range of evidence-based, rehabilitative strategies designed to foster individual success and protect public safety.
